A. The Adoption Process begins when
someone submits an adoption application. An adopter will submit
important information on the Application such as name(s), contact
information, address, work, how many pets they currently own, and
references such as their vet and friends. The adopter receives an
email letting them know we have received their application. If you
do not receive an email within 2 days, please call to verify we received
it.
B. Why do we take this information? Its important to
know that the pets we adopt are going to responsible, pet loving
families and they have the ability to give a pet a loving,
permanent home. The references will be asked how they judge the
adopters as good potential families. Since many pets have come
from previous situations that make them shy or afraid, we want to make
sure the family is able and willing to deal with the pet(s).
C. How long does it take to adopt from KDR? The
applications are transmitted instanteously via internet and we get them
daily. References are checked first: the vet is called during
business hours and the friends are called after 5-6 pm when most are
home. References are usually approved within 2-3 days. The
adopter receives an email letting them know the references have all been
approved.
D. We also visit with the prospective family in the home
setting where the pet will live. This is done in two ways.
1. The home visit can be done before the adopter
comes to select a pet. When the home visit is done this way, the
adopter may visit the Doxie Home or Foster Home and take their pet the
same day they visit. or......
2. The home visit can be done the day of transporting
the pet to the family. This works best in long distance adoptions
or when the adopter does not want to meet the prospective pet before the
adoption. In either instance the adopter is notified the home
visit is approved.
E. What does the Home Visit consist of? Its a very
simple visit similar to having friends over for a chat. We are not
there to find things wrong with your home or family...but to make
suggestions if needed to help a pet find a forever home. We will
want to know : A. Where will
the pet sleep, eat, play, exercise? Is the area safe, clean and
comfortable? We adopt to all ages of folks, and the most
important thing is love, love, love....the second most important thing
is the ability and willingness to care for the pet.
F. So what is the TOTAL TIME ITS TAKES TO COMPLETE AN
ADOPTION? If you live within Kentucky, the amount of time to adopt
a pet from KDR should be between 7-10 days. That allows time to do all
the reference checks and complete a home visit. If you live
outside of Kentucky, you can expect to wait at least 10-14 days to allow
time for the home visit to be done. You can speed up the process
by allowing us to do the home visit when delivering the pet to
you. But, if you wish to visit first to meet the pet, then allow
for extra time.
G. What can I expect when coming to the Doxie Home or
visiting a pet in a foster home? Everyone is working to help you
find the right pet. You are welcome to visit . In the Doxie
Home we take scheduled appointments Mon- Sat from 9am til 6 pm. If
you need special scheduling such as evenings or Sundays, we try to work
with you . You are settled into a comfortable receiving area with
your family and offered refreshments. You are welcome to bring
your current pet. We have reviewed your application and will bring
pets from their rooms out for you to meet. We have many to show
you and usually allow 1 hr to 1 1/2 hr per family uninterrupted so you
may have time to interact with your new family member. Take your
time.....
H. Once you have made your decision, the adoption papers are
printed up. Your pet is microchipped and that is how they are
identified and registered. The names cannot be changed, but you
may add to the name...Sally may become Sally Jean....There are two
copies made so you receive exactly what we keep in the office. All
the vetting is faxed directly to your vet to make for a smooth
transition. You may request a copy of any and all vet
records, but we still fax the records to your designated vet.
I. You will also receive some of your pets current dog food
and any medication he is taking.
J. Adoption donations are accepted to help us offset the cost of
vetting we have to do to make a pet completely healthy. Some
require spay/neuter, vaccines, dentals and others require
surgeries. The amount of a donation covers the cost for each dog in order to provide it
optimum health. We accept c/c or check Adoption
Donations. Please see our
adoption donation page. We make every attempt to keep our costs as
low as we can, but much of it depends of vet expenses.
K. A KDR volunteer will be calling you after the adoption to
make sure the pet is settling in well.
